Villa Fairmont and MHACC Unite for Fourth Annual AAPI Heritage Month Celebration

Telecare's Villa Fairmont Mental Health Rehabilitation Center in San Leandro, CA, recently immersed itself in the vibrant spirit of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The center organized an engaging presentation of short videos that vividly showcased the rich cultural heritage and history of various ethnicities in Asia, cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation for the beauty of diversity and inclusivity.

Staff at Villa Fairmont enjoyed delicious Chinese appetizers, including chicken or vegetable-only eggrolls and crab-filled wontons, generously provided by Food of Love, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to raising mental health awareness within the Chinese community. This initiative, supported by the Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities (MHACC), is part of a nationwide charity effort that channels funds from Chinese civic organizations like MHACC to local Chinese restaurants. These restaurants then prepare and donate food to programs like Villa Fairmont, spreading joy and nourishment within our community.

The ongoing partnership between MHACC and Villa Fairmont has seen them celebrate API Heritage Month together since 2020, marking this year as the fourth annual commemoration of their shared commitment to promoting equality in mental health care and service.

“Mental health stigma is an issue in every community, but we feel that having occasions like API Heritage Month being recognized and celebrated by mental health organizations helps to make our community feel seen,” said Wang. “This is important in helping break down cultural barriers to obtaining mental health care and support. It makes a huge difference if someone feels like they can go somewhere and be understood.” — MHACC’s Senior Deputy Director Carole Wang

Beyond API Heritage Month, May also marks Mental Health Awareness Month. Villa Fairmont took this opportunity to recognize the bravery and resilience of individuals by hosting an annual 'Speak-Out!' event. Peer support specialists shared their courageous stories, inspiring and empowering others in their journey toward mental well-being. The event was made even more special with the delightful presence of MHACC, whose contributions extended beyond nourishing the body, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

“We are touched by the hard work of everyone at the Villa Fairmont team,” said Wang. “We really felt the passion and energy of the staff that helps inspire our own work as well…We are so happy to have worked with Villa Fairmont for the last few years! In addition to Food of Love, we have had peer specialists go to Villa Fairmont and provide support when requested by consumers with Chinese language needs and we have collaborated on programs together such We Move 4 Health. We value our relationship with Villa Fairmont and are excited to do more together in the future!” — MHACC’s Senior Deputy Director Carole Wang

The collective efforts of the staff, clients, and community partners at Villa Fairmont have genuinely made these celebrations impactful and memorable. Their dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment exemplifies the core values of Telecare. We applaud their commitment to raising awareness, fostering understanding, and promoting mental health for all.
