Spaghetti, Marshmallows, and Healthy Communication at Herald House

Telecare's Herald House in Herald, CA, enjoyed hosting a fun and exciting team-building activity. The exercise aimed to emphasize the power of communication and how it plays an important role in success. It was a memorable day for all who were involved!

Tacia Burton, the program's administrator, led the spaghetti marshmallow exercise to demonstrate different communication styles. The activity involved two teams, each building a tower out of dry spaghetti. The team with the tallest freestanding tower, with a marshmallow on top, won.

Each group completed the activity twice. During the first round, little to no instruction was provided, allowing the groups to observe how they would typically communicate with each other. Afterward, everyone reviewed different communication methods and completed a survey to identify their communication style. Applying what they learned, the second round of the activity went much smoother!

At Telecare, we recognize the critical role of effective communication in mental health recovery. Reinforcing good communication habits helps to foster mutual trust, reduce conflict, and strengthen peer relationships. By emphasizing healthy communication practices, people have a chance to navigate their recovery journeys better.

We commend Herald House for working towards Telecare's mission of recovery through team-building exercises that encourage healthy communication.
