About La Paz Geropsychiatric Center

La Paz Gero-Psychiatric Center serves adults and older adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses, who may also have medical complications or neuro- behavioral disorders.

Opened in 1986, La Paz offers an alternative for people who might otherwise be in state hospitals or acute care facilities.

Treatment at La Paz is based on the philosophy that all individuals have the potential to improve their level of functioning and make choices that impact their quality of life. The goal of La Paz is to reduce the symptoms of severe mental illness; provide safe, effective medical and psychiatric treatment to all residents; and allow individuals more choice and involvement in their treatment.

Population Served: Adults aged 50 and older who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness
Funded by: Funding is primarily provided by the County of Los Angeles Department of Mental Health, the California Medi-Cal program for persons 65 and older, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and resident fees. Individual insurance and other government and non-government third-party payers may fund a portion of the cost of care.

Recovery Model

As with all Telecare programs, treatment at La Paz is based on the philosophy that regardless of age or degree of impairment, all individuals have the potential to improve their functioning and to make choices about their environments for living, learning, working, and socializing.

Services and Supports

Services include, but are not limited to:

  • Personalized recovery planning

  • Risk-focused assessment and intervention

  • Psychiatric assessment and treatment

  • Physical health assessment and treatment

  • Psychosocial rehabilitation

  • Medication administration and management

  • Peer support services

  • Knowledge of co-occurring disorders

  • Crisis intervention and stabilization

  • Supporting individuals in enhancing role performance in living situations

  • Dental, vision, hearing, physical

Admission Criteria

Adults aged 50 and older who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness.

Family members can contact individuals at La Paz by calling the main number at 562-633-5111.

Per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines, staff members cannot release any client information without a signed authorization.

Family members are also welcome to contact the program director.
