La Casa is licensed as a 190-bed Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (MHRC), providing assistance to adults with serious mental illness. La Casa offers evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for individuals who would otherwise be in a state hospital or acute care facility.
Telecare opened La Casa Mental Health Center in 1988 in Norwalk. The program was moved to a spacious nine-acre site, featuring a full-size gym and swimming pool, in 1997.
Treatment Practice and Philosophy
Treatment at La Casa is based on the philosophy that regardless of the degree of impairment, all individuals have the potential to achieve valued roles and make choices about living, learning, and working. There are four distinct program tracks at La Casa:
- The Dual Recovery program provides treatment for individuals with both chemical dependencies and mental illness. Symptom stabilization and rapid return to the community are primary goals for individuals recovering from an acute phase of illness.
- The STEP Unit (Stabilization Through Effective Programs) focuses on clients with behavioral/impulse control problems. The program assists individuals in identifying and developing specific behaviors that support successful community living.
- The Community Readiness Program supports clients moving toward their identified goals regarding living, working, and learning. Individuals have the opportunity to develop functional skills necessary for independent living.
- The Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Unit is the product of a partnership between La Casa and the API Alliance. The Alliance is a collaboration of eight public and private mental health service providers who address the needs of monolingual, severely mentally ill clients of Asian and Pacific Islander descents in Los Angeles County. Psychosocial rehabilitation services are delivered in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. Community Care Coordinators from the Alliance work side-by-side with La Casa staff to ensure continuity of care and to support clients in gaining the knowledge and skills that enables them to actively participate in the recovery process.
Program Structure
A multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals prepares a treatment plan with each individual. A wide range of treatment approaches allows individuals to explore their potential and to work toward their personal recovery goals.
La Casa provides training in social skills and community living, along with therapeutic and activity groups. Clients participate in vocational programs in food service, landscaping and peer counseling.
Financial Support
The majority of funding is provided through Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and resident fees. The program receives augmented program funding to provide subacute services. Individual insurance and other government and third-party payers may fund portions of the cost of care.
Referral and Admission Procedures
All La Casa clients have a history of acute psychiatric hospitalization. Los Angeles clients have been evaluated and treated at a state hospital or county acute inpatient unit immediately prior to referral to La Casa. Those admissions are arranged through the Los Angeles County Continuing Care Unit.
