Cordilleras Mental Health Rehabilitation Center primarily serves San Mateo County residents 18 and older with histories of mental illness and multiple episodes of acute psychiatric hospitalization. The goal of Cordilleras is to allow individuals who would otherwise be in a state hospital or an acute care setting to develop the skills and supports needed to live independently in the community. Cordilleras offers specialized services for persons who are dually diagnosed.

Treatment Practice and Philosophy
Treatment is based on the philosophy that regardless of the degree of impairment, all individuals have rehabilitation potential and should be encouraged to make choices about their environments for living, learning, working, and socializing.

Program Structure
A multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals prepares a treatment plan with each individual. A wide range of treatment approaches enables individuals to explore their own potential and to work toward the goal of self-reliance.

Cordilleras provides training in community living and social skills plus various therapy and activity groups. Peer counselors also lead groups and offer support. Individual and group therapy, family support, and medication are integrated into other treatment modalities.

The California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF) has honored Cordilleras with an Excellence in Programming Award for its "Transition to College Program."

Financial Support
Funding is primarily provided through San Mateo County, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and resident fees. Individuals may be admitted whose care and treatment are covered by self-pay, private insurance, Veterans' Administration, and other government and third-party payers.
