San Antonio Recovery Story

March 27, 2006

Michelle came to Telecare's San Antonio ACT program a little over two years ago.  Her mother was institutionalized since Michelle was about two years old, and one of Michelle's greatest fears was that she would follow in her mother's footsteps and spend the rest of her life in a State Hospital. Unfortunately, Michelle was first hospitalized at age 14. After she was discharged, it seemed like she was doing fairly well until about age 19 or 20 where a relationship breakup plunged her into severe depression. She spent the next few years bouncing in and out of the hospital, living in group homes and on the street.

When she signed with Telecare two years ago, she was living in a transitional shelter, terrified of failure, and very much afraid of working. However, with much care and guidance from the ACT program, Michelle is now living in a house, sharing rent with a friend, is working two jobs and has a car. Last year Michelle started taking courses at the local community college and has completed two semesters earning straight A's.

Michelle has been a presenter for Telecare at conferences and intends to do so again. She is now in the process of establishing career goals, and her intent is to get to the point where she no longer needs Telecare or any other government assistance. San Antonio ACT believes that she will succeed! Good luck, Michelle, on your exciting road of recovery!
