Crisis center opens for business

The staff is trained, the paint is fresh and even the magazines on the tables are crisply current, November 2004 issues.
After months of sometimes-heated public debate, the new Durham Center Access is slated today to open a unique doorway to help for people facing a mental health or addiction crisis.
Operated under a $2.4 million contract by Telecare Mental Health Services of North Carolina, Durham Center Access encompasses some 10,000 square feet of renovated medical offices in Building 900 of Central Medical Park. The one-story complex at 2609 N. Duke St. occupies space that formerly housed Triangle Orthopedics, a physicians group now located in a new headquarters on Ben Franklin Boulevard.
Telecare Mental Health Services is a private, for-profit company and one of the largest providers of adult mental health services in the country.
The Durham Center, meanwhile, is the local management entity that provides and coordinates mental health and behavioral health services for Durham County residents. Through Durham Center Access, it will offer round-the-clock assessment and support to children, adolescents and adults with emergency mental health or behavioral health needs -- even if they don't have the money to pay a specialist or a hospital. It also will be able to help people with chronic mental health or substance abuse issues and developmental disabilities, as well as those who may be undergoing an emotional crisis and need help coping.
