March 27, 2006

We Did It! Telecare Donates Over $26,000 to the American Red Cross

As of Thursday, September 29th, 2005, Telecare employees had, through personal donations of cash and PDL, as well as a few fund-raisers, raised over $11,000 for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Including the initial $5000 that Telecare donated, plus $10,000 in matching funds, Telecare has donated over $26,000 to the Red Cross.

Thank you everyone for your generosity, warmth and support for this effort. It means everything to the people affected by this disaster.

Continue to Help
It's not over yet. Funds are still needed to rebuild the Gulf Coast cities, and help people regain their lives. You can help by continuing to donate time and money.

Support: Donations and Direct Care

2005's hurricane season, including Katrina and Rita, have devastated the Gulf Coast. Telecare's employees and clients have given generously of time and money with open hearts. Here are a few of the ways people have responded:

Telecare's Mobile Crisis team in Dallas, Texas, provided mental health crisis support to victims of Hurricane Katrina. Crisis staff also responded to calls within the greater Dallas community. Suja Mathews, Administrator, said, "The Mobile Crisis Team assisted in evacuating mental health clients as well as the social workers, as both groups were in crisis." Read More About It

Cheryl Mitchell, from Corporate, writes: "I am very proud of our Texas team stepping in and helping those people down in Texas. I am proud of our fellow Telecare employees for being there for those in need."

Tamie Ryniker, from The Recovery Center at Gresham, writes, "Annually, we     purchase food for our Natural Disaster Food Supply Kit, and donate the food we are replacing to the Oregon Food Bank. This year when we replenished our supply, in light of the Katrina hurricane, we donated our food to the Salvation Army for the Katrina hurricane relief effort."

Each year, John Black of EMRS puts on a Blues Fest in Modesto, CA. This year, a Red Cross tent was at the festival, accepting donations and distributing information. John also had a Red Cross link on his business website.

As usual, the people of Telecare have shared their kindness and generosity with those in need. It's what we do as an organization, and as individuals. Thank you.

Redwood Place Clients Raise Funds

Soon after Hurricane Katrina hit, the residents at Redwood Place (Castro Valley, CA) proposed holding a fundraiser to help the victims. They were saddened by the images and reports from the newspapers and television. To raise money, one resident suggested a walkathon and another recommended a bake sale. Redwood Place held a bake sale on September 9th and 15th, 2005. Staff brought in baked goods to sell and the  residents were responsible for packaging the goods and handling the money. Some residents did not have sufficient cash on hand, so they signed IOUs for up to $2.00. Within two weeks, all the residents who wrote IOUs paid what they owed without prompting. Redwood Place also held a walkathon on September 23rd. Each resident "walker" was sponsored by a staff person for $10.00. Residents and staff walked a total of 1.2 miles to the library and back. Together, Redwood Place raised a total of $464.81 from their fundraising efforts. These efforts have helped bridge gaps between staff and residents. Redwood Place is proud of how residents reached out to those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. The compassion that they have shown has really been a source of true inspiration to all.
