Why We Work Here: 72nd Avenue Recovery Center

When 72nd Ave. Recovery Center opened and our first 2 residents arrived we had no food! I quickly went to my administrator with a grocery list.

I was informed by another Recovery Specialist that one of our residents likes to drink decaf tea at night so it quickly went on the list.

When I returned from the store and had put the groceries away I went and got the resident. I showed him the tea I had purchased for him. I had put his name on it and showed him the cupboard where he could keep it. I explained anytime he wanted to go into the kitchen to fix his tea to just ask any of the staff. He was amazed that I would purchase tea just for him let alone allow him to make it whenever he wanted it.

About 3 hours later he came to me and asked if he could make some tea. I promptly went into the kitchen with him while he prepared his tea.

He turned to me and said "I haven't been able to make a cup of tea whenever I wanted to for 13 years!" A simple cup of tea...it brought tears to my eyes. The simplest thing that we take for granted was unattainable for our resident for years!!!
