Telecare Hero: Scott M., CHANGES
March 20, 2006
Scott practices what he preaches. He created this program on a model of motivational interviewing and client centered practices, including a harm reduction approach and meeting the client where they are.
He treats all the clients he meets (and I think he has met with all of the clients who come in to our office, and has definitely met with all clients who ask to speak with him) in a manner consistent with these principles. He has helped clients to try to face the consequences of their choices, has been incredibly patient with where they are, and has helped us set good boundaries with them without getting into a power struggle with the clients.
I also have seen him practice these principles with his staff - definitely with myself - and I have learned that it is possible, and rewarding, to apply these ideas to everyday life, and not just to working with the people we serve. This has not been easy for him, as some of our clients (and at times some of the staff - including myself, I suspect) are extremely difficult to maintain equanimity and perspective with, but he seems to take on this challenge with great enthusiasm, despite the stress it brings.
I feel honored to have been given a chance to do this work, and I thank him for his significant - no, essential - part in my being here.
